Robles writes: "Nearly three weeks after Hurricane Maria tore through Puerto Rico, many sick people across the island remain in mortal peril."

Puerto Rico's Health Care Is in Dire Condition, Three Weeks After Maria

By Frances Robles, The New York Times

12 October 17

arry Figueroa, a teacher who went a week without the oxygen that helped him breathe, died here last week at 58. His body went unrefrigerated for so long that the funeral director could not embalm his badly decomposed corpse.

Miguel Bastardo Beroa’s kidneys are failing. His physicians at the intensive care unit at Doctors Hospital in Carolina are treating him for a bacterial disease that he probably caught in floodwaters contaminated with animal urine.

José L. Cruz wakes up in the middle of the night three times a week to secure a spot in line for dialysis. His treatment hours have been cut back to save fuel for the generators that power the center.

A note of caution regarding our comment sections:

For months a stream of media reports have warned of coordinated propaganda efforts targeting political websites based in the U.S., particularly in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

We too were alarmed at the patterns we were, and still are, seeing. It is clear that the provocateurs are far more savvy, disciplined, and purposeful than anything we have ever experienced before.

It is also clear that we still have elements of the same activity in our article discussion forums at this time.

We have hosted and encouraged reader expression since the turn of the century. The comments of our readers are the most vibrant, best-used interactive feature at Reader Supported News. Accordingly, we are strongly resistant to interrupting those services.

It is, however, important to note that in all likelihood hardened operatives are attempting to shape the dialog our community seeks to engage in.

Adapt and overcome.

WHERE are ANY Sane Heads in Washington to countermand this Bigoted, Racist Son of a Bitch from DESTROYING Puerto Rico and her People? As a Retired R.N. With Family History in Puerto Rico, it makes my Blood Boil! My Great Aunt and a colleague of hers founded a Nursing School in Humacao back in the Day after serving under General Pershing in Camp Jackson, S.C. She got Tropical Sprue and had to leave in the mid Twenties. Allowing this important work to be destroyed on the Altar of this Flaming Anal Termini's "Dick"tatorship is not only Criminal, it is against God, himself! IMPEACH this Morally Crippled P.O.S. and HELP ALL Americans!

The USA is becoming one big slaughter house: storms, flood, fire, police shootings, gun deaths, cuts in food aid, heating, housing, schools, Clean Air & Water being repealed. And yet, nothing is really being addressed. As he song 'Amazing Grace' puts it, 'There are none so blind as those that will not see.'

This subject could quickly dwarf all others.

It's completely insane that we aren't hearing more about Puerto Rico in the MSM.

These are American citizens, and some of them haven't eaten, or had access to safe water or sanitation for a few WEEKS!

A friend just, finally, got her mom out of P.R. to the mainland. Her mom's lost over 15 pounds, is sick, and had to shower in rain water to deal with the filth.

are very REAL concerns here. They could kill hundreds or THOUSANDS in the next few months, while American conservatives sit on their fat asses and do absolutely NOTHING.

Our grandchildren will talk about our generation with disgust, the same we talk about the Indian massacres, slavery, etc.

I can't believe my country is allowing this to happen in our own country.

Puerto Ricans are:

-darker skinned
-more Catholic
-more poor
-pay taxes but can't vote

ALL of these are the REAL reason why our government is actively sabotaging the efforts to prevent this from becoming a 3rd world humanitarian crisis.

How is it possible to not be ashamed of this country right now?

USA = unjust, sleazy, Americans who brought this filth into the WH. And I'm blaming both parties here for their collusion. Please, lets start a new party with real sane, thinking, compassionate people and oust the scourge that has taken over this country.
