Putin-Linked Think Tank Crafted Plan to Swing Election for Trump: Report

By Nikita Vladimirov, The Hill

20 April 17

Moscow-based think tank linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin created a plan to swing the 2016 presidential election in favor of Donald Trump, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

Three current and four former U.S. officials told Reuters that two confidential documents obtained from the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies justify the conclusion reached by the U.S. intelligence community about Russia's interference in the U.S. election.

According to the report, the institute is run by former senior Russian intelligence officials appointed by the Russian president's office.

The seven U.S. officials told Reuters that one of the documents was a strategy paper drafted in June 2016 that advocated a propaganda campaign on various media platforms urging U.S. voters to back a presidential candidate with a friendlier stance toward Russia.

The second document, written in October, advocated for Russia to switch focus to amplifying voter fraud claims, given the widely held view at the time that Democrat Hillary Clinton was likely to beat Trump.

The shift in strategy would be used to undermine Clinton's presidency and damage her reputation, the document implied.

According to four of the sources, the June strategy paper expanded on Putin's earlier strategy from March 2016, in which Moscow allegedly instructed state-backed media outlets such as Sputnik News and RT to produce more pro-Trump content.

A spokesperson for Sputnik dismissed the claims of U.S. sources, calling them an "absolute pack of lies" in a statement to Reuters.

"Rodion, O Rodion... wherefore art thou, my Rodion?"

Time - right here. While the substance of this story may be true, the story itself is just bullshit. Why can't it name the seven sources or any other people involved? Why can't it quote from the report. This story is so vague that it is worthless.

The strategy paper vaguely described above is pretty much what think tanks do. RISS is not secret at all. All its research papers are published on its website in both Russian and English.

\it would be useful to compare this think tank's analytic papers to those of any American or Israeli think tank, of which there are thousands in the US.

You, "wherefore" in Elizabethan english means "why"? I am Rodion because I was christened that way. I was born on the holy day of the apostle Rodion, a colleague of Peter and Paul. Many Russians are named after the saint on whose day they were born. It brings us good luck in life and helps us remain on the sacred path.

Great biopic, by the way. I was raised Catholic, named for Saint Brendan, patron of sailors and navigators and perhaps one of many pre-Columbian "discoverers" of an already populated America.

Dad stayed at the helm of his LST for 5 days and nights in a typhoon in the South China Sea in WW II, with a Saint Brendan medal hanging from his neck, so my name was foreordained ten years before I was born.

It would be a pleasure to drink and chat with you, my good sir!

Quoting Rodion Raskolnikov:

Ahem. The "substance of the story"--that is, what it actually says--may be true, but even if it is, it's bullshit.

With that kind of thinking, you belong in the Trump administration.

This is a kind of "dumb" article. It's time to move off these no-depth articles.

Right. How many times and ways can you say BS, BS, BS? Talk about Fake News! RSN, stop printing this nonsense. Bring back the genuine journalism of Robert Parry and Glenn Greenwald. Keep your desperate fundraising to yourself until you do. Then I might start contributing again.

Unnamed sources and secret evidence?

...all perfectly in line with the great tradition of emerican journalism stretching back to the Battleship Maine and likely on into the foreseeable future.

Not credible.

Any country gullible enough to believe this endless stream of gossip, innuendo and unfounded calumny deserves what it gets in Hillary 2.0 vs. Trump the sequel.

Um, Guo, wasn't Deep Throat an unnamed source?

When I visited the National Archives shortly after Nixon resigned, I saw his brief, tiny, letter of resignation among several documents on display that you could buy copies of. When I requested a copy, this longhair was told it was unavailable by the fascist pig behind the counter.

But the point is, Nixon was brought down by an unnamed source, Bubba. Can we hope against hope, and your jaded, prejudiced disdain, that such an event might happen again?!?

Better travel back in time and review your facts.

Nixon was brought down by published evidence: the tapes he himself recorded.

-2 # Time Traveller 2017-04-20 19:22
Well, gee, Guo, who's opinion should I value the most... Yours, or Bob Woodward and Carl Berstein's, ahem, the guys who broke the Watergate story? Man... that's a toughie, dude.

Let's think it through one more time... Deep Throat's info was solid gold, since it matched that of the secret, ongoing FBI investigation if Nixon.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Throat_(Watergate)#Role_in_the_Watergate_scandal

-1 # Time Traveller 2017-04-20 19:46
Of course Deep Throat's info was gold, because he was Assistant FBI Director Mark Felt.

Yes, White House aide Butterfield revealed the existence of the tapes during the Senate investigation of Nixon, but that investigation never would have happened if the huge amount of info Felt furnished Bernstein and Woodward with was bogus.

Butterfield might have been a career CFR functionary like those I pointed out to you earlier, eh? Believe it or not, we can still occasionally find real statesmen in Washingtoon... but they aren't ELECTED.

Back then, the Post still had some journalist integrity and insisted on multiple sources if they were unnamed. Nothing was published on the word of "Deep Throat" alone. In fact, he most or less pointed them in the right direction and made they get the details elsewhere.

-4 # Time Traveller 2017-04-20 12:57
Let's think this out together, Guo:

Every admin, Rep or Dem, since 1947 has had approximately 400 career Council on Foreign Relations functionaries in it, with tenures averaging 26 years. This is an aspect of the Continuity of Government doctrine that has so far kept presidential assholes from starting a nuclear war... Capisce?

Granted, THIS is probably why Dump spends so much time at his palace in Florida, where he is really king.

But I am fairly certain that many unnamed whistleblowers REALLY EXIST and are getting paid by We the Taxpayers.

That, and the White House might be chock full of undetectable passive bugs planted by Obama and company.

Remember when we allowed a Soviet building contractor to build our embassy in Moscow? There were thousands of passive bugs poured into the precast concrete wall sections.

The infestation/inf iltration was so complete that the embassy was bulldozed and rebuilt by an American contractor... Our tax dollars at work, eh?

Awww... We all know that Dems would never stoop to unhanded tricks, right? Just joking about Barack Brand Bugs... kinda, I guess... ya never really know...

The missile thrown at a Syrian base by order of Trump effectively scaled up the cold war. There are domestic reasons for Trump’s backing down on his promises to improve relations with Russia. A principal reason was the Democratic insistence that Russia interfered in the American elections in favor of Trump. This stance conveniently ignored that the United States had for decades, not just interfered with elections in other countries, but actively engaged in regime change and war to force a country into submission to the imperial vision. But both intransigent Republicans and corporate Democrats see no contradiction in this stance. Without any serious examination of why they lost the election, the Democrats screamed our enemies the Reds are sabotaging our honest and fair elections. Red-baiting was now turned against some of Trump’s advisors. They demanded Intelligence Committee investigation, even a Special Prosecutor. Despite his intransigent character Trump caved and acted to end establishing better relations with the Russians. The Mother of all Bombs dropped on Afganistán and the step-up hype about North Korea makes it appear that already in 2017 that Trump is ready to go to war, with the end result the probable use by both parties in the Korean situation of nuclear weapons.

Or not, of course: ¨unidentified ‘sources/offici als’ is convenient. It might be true, but who can tell in this mud storm of allegations from sources we have finally learned cannot be trusted even should they be telling the truth.

Even if the Russians did plot to get Trump elected, they could not have done it without all the Americans who were ready, willing, and able to believe their propaganda.

Norman Solomon, long associated with Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, and a Sanders delegate in 2016, writes this:

Democratic Party's Anti-Bernie Elites Have a Huge Stake in Blaming Russia

https://www.commondreams.org/views/2017/04/20/democratic-partys-anti-bernie-elites-have-huge-stake-blaming-russia

Russia did not make Clinton lose. And anything Russia did to US we have done many times over to Russia and dozens of other countries. Have an independent investigation, by all means, but please stop following this ridiculous story and HOLD ESTABLISHMENT DEMOCRATS ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE 2016 LOSS.

The DP needs to sincerely embrace a progressive agenda, stop taking corporate money, flush the neoliberals out of the party, and get behind progressive candidates. NOW.
